In 1992 the Endocannabinoid System was discovered by Raphael Choulam; William Devanne and Dr. Lumir. Endocannabinoid System (ECS) in the human body was found to mediate and modify body functions. These scientists discovered that within the human brain a transmitter known as Anandamide was the naturally occurring cannabinoid. In other words the human brain actually produces a cannabinoid which binds to CB1 receptors in the brain and nervous system and CB2 receptors in the immune system to alter function. Studies demonstrated that deficiencies of Anandamide is associated with a variety of immune and nervous system disorders such as seizures and inflammation. Growing scientific research now supports claims that cannabinoid and endocannabinoid has specific effects on human psychological and immune function when taken as a supplement. Patient access to CBD oil and medical marijuana is currently not difficult to obtain for most patients.
In February 2014, Farm Bill 2040 legalized growth of hemp for the production of terpene’s which are the active component of CBD oil that have the unique ability to improve body functions by binding to selected receptors that control pain, anxiety, and inflammation.
Terpenes are active in modifying, activating or deactivating i.e. modulating your response have been used for thousands of years in human history for a variety or purposes including medicine, foods, and body oils. Terpenes have had a long history in the United States. In fact several different President’s are known to have farmed (Hemp) terpenes including George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and Andrew Jackson.
CBD OIL v. HEMP OIL
CBD oil uses the entire plant while hemp oil comes from its seeds. CBD oil is made from a variety of parts of the mature hemp plant including its stalks and flowers. In order to get CBD and other compounds from the plants they must be separated in a process called extraction.
CBD EFFECTS ON YOUR BRAIN
All cannabinoids including CBD produce effects in the body by attaching to receptors. CB1 receptors are present throughout the body but many of these receptors are in the brain. The CB1 receptors in the brain deal with coordination and movement, pain, emotions and mood, thinking, appetite and memories and other active functions.
DOES CBD OILS SHOW UP ON A DRUG TEST?
CBD should not show up on a drug test. However, many CBD products contain trace amounts of THC, Delta-9-tetra hydro cannabinol, one of marijuana’s main active ingredients. If enough THC is present it will show up on a drug test. Even in rare cases using CBD by some manufacturers who acknowledge a percentage of THC present in their CBD oil might lead to a positive drug screen. It is important to know the CBD product that you are using and to know the contents of the CBD oil including THC contamination.
How often should I take CBD oil? When using CBD oil for pain, many patients look for a “sweet spot” somewhere between 10-20 mg taken 1-2 times a day or up to 3 times a day when the pain is extremely severe. It is important to understand the concentration of the CBD oil you are using. For example if you purchase the Agora 1,000 mg per 30 cc you essentially have the ability to receive 33.3 mg per 1 ml dropper. Accordingly, a recommended dose of the 1,000 mg strength per 30 cc’s would be ½ a dropper 1 time per day followed by a titration up to 1 dropper per day, either in a single dose or divided ½ of a dropper 2x a day. The dosage range for most patients is typically between 10mg 1 or 2 times a day up to 20mg 2 or 3 times a day. Recommendation is to start low and to increase until the symptoms are controlled with the least possible dose which controls desired symptoms.
