Photobiomodulation Therapy – Improve the Outcome

Trauma to the head of any kind small or large can affect patients physically, cognitively, emotionally and behaviorally.  Concussions have become a major health concern in the United States and throughout the world.

Initial evaluation of the head, spine and brain must be ruled out using appropriate diagnostic test such as CT scans and MRI scans.

Once the diagnosis is made symptom checklist, neuropsychological test, balance test can be used for diagnosis and monitoring of recovery.

Athletes with diagnosed or suspected concussion should not return to continue their athletic performance until medically cleared.

Cognitive and physical rest has been the preferred medical management.  Recently, photobiomodulation (PBM) therapy has been utilized through actively treating patients allowing patients to return to their usual activities sooner and with less disability.  Individuals being treated with PBM gradually return to activities while receiving PBM therapy.  Patients with severe disability secondary to concussion and those patients having experienced multiple head injuries over time will often require a longer period of PBM therapy and restriction of activities.  Notably, each patient with concussion must be treated uniquely and an individual care plan designed for the specific patient.  Our experience is that each concussion patient requires a specific care plan to address the specific signs and symptoms the patient is experiencing and the treatment course adjusted as the patient improves yet sometimes experiences setbacks by new and/or additional treatments.
