SYPHILIS IN MARYLAND
The Sollay Medical Center is providing you with an alert in response to ongoing increases in syphilis and congenital syphilis in Maryland in 2018 and 2019. A syphilis epidemic is occurring in many parts of Maryland. A disproportionate number of Maryland citizens especially those who report exchanging sex for drugs and/or money; many of whom also report injection or other drug use are noting a significant rise in the occurrence of syphilis and congenital syphilis. Women of reproductive age have significant increases in diagnosis which also increases the potential for congenital syphilis which can cause fetal or infant mortality and devastating lifelong complications for newborn infants.

Together we can bring this serious medical epidemic of syphilis and congenital syphilis in Maryland under control. Patient’s working with primary care physicians and health department staff are available to examine all patients who have been exposed and who are at high risk for syphilis. Frequent women’s health examinations and truthful relating of sexual history and sexual partners can in fact bring this very disturbing syphilis epidemic under control.
